The future of video games – security and predictability: results of the GDC conference

This year’s GDC video game developers’ conference showed more than interesting preliminary results. Having analyzed it, we can conclude that the industry will focus on avoiding risks, and for this purpose, they will use established intellectual property. It’s the safest solution available – and it’s the one they will use.

Last week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco isn’t usually a significant event in terms of public announcements. However, given the failure of E3, it was a valuable opportunity for developers to meet each other and for publishers to make business deals.

The main problem is that the gaming industry is currently precarious. More and more people are becoming disillusioned with the quality of big AAA games. Usually, these people are leaving for indie projects or even iGaming. Internet gambling has become popular in the last few years. Arcades are especially popular, and plinko is the most famous of them. We found this out after analyzing online casino review sites. The largest of them, www plinkogames in, provides up-to-date information about casinos with plinko and other popular games. And almost everywhere these games are on the list of the most demanded by users.

Publishers continue their familiar and traditional complaints about the lack of growth and the high cost of creating modern AAA games. No strategies are in place to help solve these problems, and the conference dawah’s predictable answer is to rely more on established franchises. The industry intends to avoid anything involving even the smallest amount of risk.

All market participants realize that such a strategy is a dead end and will only lead to the gaming industry’s self-destruction, but they persistently continue to follow this path. The main problem is ignored.

Epic Games Vice President Saks Persson made a statement that the video game industry has not grown to match budgets. The golden mean are games in the horror genre, where budgets are often relatively modest. That said, the best games in this genre are consistently popular with players, which helps the projects pay off. Games in other genres often disappoint players. Usually the industry produces products that can be said to be good, predictable games. Tencent vice president Martin Sibille also acknowledged that it has become harder to take risks. The opinion of someone who has worked at EA for 15 years is worth considering.

Thus, the situation in the video game industry is depressing—essentially, if a gamer wants an interesting product, the only option is the indie sector. Everything else is endless sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. Indie companies offer a welcome respite from them.

Devolver Digital’s Nigel Lowry noted at the conference that the basic strategy is to survive what’s happening in the industry. In his view, the risks remain high, but not so high as to become catastrophic.
